Aug 2023: The XEOMIN (incobotulinumtoxinA) drug from Merz Therapeutics has been permitted a new indication by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to treat focal spasticity of the lower limbs that affects the ankle joint. The procedure was previously authorized in the UK to treat spasticity in the upper limbs. Thanks to the increased permission, the company can now offer comprehensive care to anyone with spasticity who requires it. IncobotulinumtoxinA is the active component of XEOMIN. To increase muscle tone, it is intramuscularly administered. Therapy reduces the strength of voluntary muscular contraction by blocking nerve signals to the muscles. It reduces aberrant muscular tone by preventing the release of acetylcholine from peripheral nerve terminals. According to Merz Therapeutics, XEOMIN is now suitable to treat the lower and upper limbs separately by adjusting the dose as required.
