April 2023- Scientists at the paper technology department of IIT-Roorkee have created an affordable, biodegradable water-resistant coating material, which they say could substitute the plastic coating used on disposable paper cups and plates. The researchers utilized a plant-derived biopolymer and an organic water-repellent agent. "The lifespan of paper cups or other items made with their coating material would be 7 to 8 months," the researchers stated. They also claimed the invention "improves the safety and cleanliness of disposable cups and plates."
