October 2023- A partnership between EXMAR and Seapeak, EXMAR LPG BV, is moving onward with ammonia as a fuel for two Midsize Gas Carriers (MGCs) on charge at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea. The ships will be the first maritime vessel to be driven by dual-fuel ammonia engines, enabling nearly zero emissions trading when using ammonia. WINGD and the fuel supply system by Wärtsilä Gas Resolutions will provide the engines. The Executive Director at EXMAR, Carl-Antoine Saverys, said that as the pioneering international transporters of ammonia, the company is happy to be building vessels with an operational carbon footprint lowering of 90%, which considerably supersedes the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 's release reduction goals. This is feasible due to the years of knowledge of EXMAR's operational and technical teams and the collaborative effort and contribution of all their project partners. The 46,000 m³ MGCs are planned for supply in early 2026. As a global leader in the maritime transportation of ammonia and LPG and the transformation of gasses, EXMAR has a long tradition of innovation in new ship designs, including the world's first floating infrastructure platforms. With over four decades of know-how in handling ammonia cargo, the company and its dedicated seafarers are confident in their ability to navigate safely and successfully using this new zero-carbon shipping fuel.
