The mobile emissions catalysts and precious metal services businesses of BASF have been fully separated, and a new legal company called BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) has been established. In December 2021, the company first declared its plan to carve out the entity; an 18-month timeline was given for completion.

Mobile emission catalysts for petrol, diesel and off-road vehicles, motorcycles, small engines and other applications are produced by ECMS, a global leader in emissions catalysts. Along with being the biggest recycler of precious metals from used automotive catalysts, it is a well-known provider of trading, services, and products related to precious metals. Twenty production sites, over 4,500 employees, and 15 countries make up ECMS's global operations.

ECMS employs over 4,500 people worldwide and operates 20 production sites across 15 countries. ECMS is a stand-alone company that manages its own services, IT infrastructure, and legal entities. The ECMS company will still be included in the Surface Technologies segment's Catalysts division.
