Antifouling coatings companies play a vital role in the maritime industry, providing innovative solutions to prevent the accumulation of marine organisms on ship hulls. These coatings not only enhance vessel performance but also reduce environmental impact by lowering the need for frequent hull cleaning and maintenance. As the maritime industry continues to prioritize sustainability, antifouling coatings companies are at the forefront of delivering eco-friendly and effective solutions.

Antifouling Coatings Key Companies

October 2023

Hempel, a well-known innovator in antifouling technology, has announced that Silic One, a novel, high-performance antifouling coating that is copper- and biocide-free, would be sold in the United States and Canada. Hempel's Silic One, sold exclusively in North America by SeaWide Distribution, is a ground-breaking bottom coating that is environmentally benign, saves time cleaning a vessel's bottom, increases economy by giving better boat speed, and uses less fuel.

Silic One is distinguished from other antifouling products by Hempel's Hydrogel technology, which is exclusive to Silic One.

March 2023

PPG has released a biocide-free antifouling coating that, according to the company, employs a ground-breaking methodology to assist shipowners in reducing energy use and carbon emissions while also meeting requests for improved performance without having a negative effect on the maritime environment.

The coating, PPG Sigmaglide 2390, is based on HydroReset technology from PPG. Because of this, when the coating is submerged in water, it changes to form a super-smooth, nearly frictionless surface that marine creatures cannot recognize and stick to.

The new antifouling coating enables vessels to maintain a clean hull and reduce drag, achieving power savings of up to 20%, a speed loss performance of less than 1%, and up to 35% reduction in CO2 emissions in comparison to traditional antifouling coatings, according to third-party evidence based on ISO 19030 and International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) standards. The performance you get will depend on the ship's model and the circumstances.

Without releasing any biocides into the ocean, PPG Sigmaglide 2390 coating provides superior fouling management efficacy.
