Latest Bionic Ear Companies Update
Feb 2023: The significant hearing aid device "HiResTM Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant" from Advanced Bionics does not violate the European patent EP 31 38 605 held by rival MED-EL. Therefore, the District Court of The Hague decided that the company could keep selling this in the Netherlands, finding that the HiRes goods from Advanced Bionics do not fall under the purview of EP 605 as it is now in effect. The patent had been restricted previously in the proceedings by the Technical Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office. Advanced Bionics, MED-EL, and Cochlear Corporation are the industry leaders regarding cochlear implants. Given that Germany and the UK are Advanced Bionics' two largest European markets, the case, which takes place across Europe, is extremely important for the company and the cochlear implant industry. For example, the HiRes cochlear implants constitute 95% of the company's revenue in the UK.
