The Indian government opened the sector for private players, and 100 deep tech startups have sprung up.
On July 26, 2023, Pixxel, a Bengaluru-based space startup, announced receiving a multi-crore grant to manufacture miniaturized multi-payload satellites for the Indian Air Force from the Ministry of Defence (iDEX) for Innovations for Defence Excellence. Received as a part of the SPARK grants by iDEX, this grant will enable Pixxel to develop small satellites of up to 150 kgs for electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and hyperspectral purposes, marking a significant milestone in Pixxel's mission to revolutionize the space industry.
On June 13, 2023, Indian Startup Azista BST Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (ABA) launched its first satellite, ABA First Runner (AFR), as part of the Transporter 8 Mission. AFR is an 80kg satellite built on a modular bus platform and can host a wide-swath optical remote sensing payload with panchromatic and multispectral imaging capabilities.
