Secondary Paper and Paperboard Luxury Market
May 2023- As part of its commitment to becoming more sustainable, Diageo Global Travel is ditching cardboard gift boxes, introducing recycled glass bottles, and rethinking store design. Diageo Global Travel has removed a major proportion of the secondary packaging in travel retail of its flagship brand, Johnnie Walker whisky. The initiative, which is part of Diageo's broader Society 2030 Spirit of Progress Plan, has already saved over 183m cardboard boxes. For instance, at the opening of the new Johnnie Walker Blue Label shop-in-shop at World Duty-Free's London Heathrow Terminal 2 last month, accessibly priced expressions such as Johnnie Walker Red, Black, and Gold Label were all on sale without gift boxes. Diageo is committed to becoming sustainable by design and has the ambition to send zero waste to landfills from its operations and offices by 2030. First announced in 2020, the Johnnie Walker paper-based bottle, the world's first 100% PET-free paper-based pulp bottle, is due to retail this year. Diageo is also developing more sustainable glass bottles, a recent example being a 100% recycled glass bottle created for its Talisker single malt brand. For every purchase, the company will contribute to Parley they are a charitable group that exists to clean up the ocean. They go out with these great big nets, and they sweep the plastic off the ocean floor. The company will contribute to the cost of doing that through that pack.
