A significant investment in a new production facility by Toshiba Materials Co. Ltd. is expected to significantly increase the production capacity of silicon nitride balls. The facility will be built at the business's Oita Operations in northern Kyushu, Japan. It is anticipated that the roughly US$50 million-, or 7-billion-yen, project will be completed by January 2026.
Higher voltage batteries and faster charging times are not the only performance enhancements and solutions needed for automobile electrification to continue advancing. Integrating motors, inverters, and decelerators is one way to increase performance. Motor bearings are more susceptible to electrolytic corrosion as a result; however, this risk can be mitigated by using hybrid bearings, which combine ceramic balls with steel inner and outer races.Â
Ceramic balls are increasingly being recognized as the ideal solution due to their exceptional strength, superior wear resistance, and insulating qualities. To meet the growing demand for silicon nitride balls for electric vehicles, Toshiba Materials is making proactive investments in production.

Boca Bearings has come up with a new and expanded selection of machine tool spindle bearings in hybrid steel and ceramic configurations. The newest generation of steel and ceramic hybrid machine tool spindle bearings is designed to withstand the demanding requirements of modern manufacturing applications.
The 52100 series steel races and silicon nitride (Si3N4) balls are features of the ceramic hybrid machine tool spindle bearings. One benefit of ceramic hybrid machine spindle bearings is their longer bearing life because the ceramic balls inhibit the possibility of cold welding between the ball as well as the races.
