Stretch and Shrink Film Market

The humble stretch and shrink film market might not grab headlines, but it quietly binds the world together. From securing pallets of goods to snugly hugging your takeout container, these plastic films play a crucial role in packaging and protecting diverse products. Yet, beneath this seemingly mundane surface lies a dynamic and competitive landscape where giants grapple with niche players, all vying for a slice of the wrapping pie. Let's unravel the strategies, trends, and recent developments shaping this vibrant ecosystem.

Strategies Stretching the Competition Thin:

1. Diversification Beyond the Bundle: Leading players like Berry Plastics and Sealed Air are expanding beyond traditional pallet wrapping and exploring new territory in food packaging, e-commerce, and even agricultural applications. This mitigates risk and capitalizes on new growth opportunities.

2. The Green Wrap Revolution: Sustainability is the new buzzword. Bemis is leading the charge by developing bio-based and recyclable stretch and shrink films, catering to environmentally conscious consumers and aligning with stringent regulations.

3. Technological Twists: Innovation keeps the market taut. Dow Chemical Company is pioneering self-sealing films and puncture-resistant options, enhancing product protection and efficiency.

4. Geographic Expansion: Emerging markets like China and India are fertile ground for growth. Bonset America Corporation, for instance, has established facilities in these regions to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for affordable and readily available films.

5. Vertical Integration: Gaining control of the supply chain is key. Anchor Packaging is acquiring raw material sources and investing in manufacturing facilities, ensuring quality control and cost-effectiveness while reducing dependence on external suppliers.

Factors Shaping Market Share:

1. Material Meanderings: The type of film matters. Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) dominates due to its affordability and versatility, while high-density polyethylene (HDPE) offers superior strength and heat resistance. ExxonMobil excels at catering to specific material needs.

2. Application Focus: From securing heavy machinery to wrapping delicate fruits, each application demands specific film properties. Inteplast Group, for instance, offers a diverse range of films with varying thicknesses, cling strengths, and temperature tolerances.

3. Cost Consciousness: Price remains a crucial factor, particularly for bulk applications. Asian manufacturers often offer cost-competitive options, while European and American players command premium prices for high-performance, specialized films.

4. Sustainability Spotlight: The green wave is crashing upon the market. Regulations like the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive are driving demand for biodegradable and recyclable options, impacting market dynamics.

5. Technological Advancements: New film compositions, application technologies, and even automated wrapping systems can disrupt the market. DOW Chemical Company, for example, is leading the development of smart films with embedded sensors, potentially revolutionizing inventory management and product tracking.

Recent Developments:

September 2021: Clysar unveiled Clysar EVO-C confidential shrink film at PACK EXPO Las Vegas as part of its line of recyclable shrink films that have already received pre-approval from the How2Recycle programme for the shop drop-off label. Clysar EVO-C film is a specialised opaque security and shipping material that offers UV protection and can significantly reduce packaging weight and space requirements.

August 2021: American manufacturer of stretch and shrink films Five Points Films has been bought by Revolution. Revolution will be able to expand its stretch film market as a result of this acquisition.

Cortec launched its Eco Wrap, one of the first ever compostable machine-grade stretch films, in January 2021. The product is ground-breaking in that automated stretch wrapping transforms pallets into storage units, inventorying aids or transportation tools extensively used by warehouse and industrial packaging communities today.

Revolution purchased Five Points Films, based in the United States, manufacturing stretch & shrink films in August 2021. With this move, Revolution hopes to expand its market share of the stretch film industry.
