July 2023- The naval group achieved a significant milestone in early May when the nuclear attack submarine (SSN) Amethyst successfully launched an aerial drone in the Mediterranean. The drone, developed by Toulouse-based company Diodon, is unique in its design and capabilities. Its inflatable structure makes it virtually indestructible and unsinkable, while its advanced day/night sensors ensure high-performance operations. Additionally, the drone is waterproof, with the remote control having an IP67 rating and the drone itself having an IP56 rating. It can operate in water conditions up to sea state 4 and remains stable when landing on water. Furthermore, it can take off and land in water without any limitations and can also perform hard landings on both land and ship decks. These remarkable features open new tactical opportunities.
June 2023- During the summer, Russia conducted a test of the Poseidon nuclear underwater drone. This device is quite formidable, boasting impressive characteristics such as weighing up to 100 metric tons and measuring up to 20 meters (65.6 ft) in length, with a diameter of up to 2 meters. With speculated blast power of 2 megatons or more, the Poseidon is an immensely potent weapon. Its propulsion is driven by a liquid metal reactor, providing a minimum output of 15 megawatts, and it utilizes electric transmission. The operational range of the Poseidon is nearly boundless, allowing it to operate at depths of up to 1,000 meters (3280 ft) and reach speeds of up to about 100 knots (185 km/h or 115 MPH). To enhance its precision and capabilities, the Poseidon combines artificial intelligence with satellite control systems for guidance. This advanced underwater drone is deployed from a submarine, which serves as its primary launch platform.
