July 2023- The Janus thermal cloak is a car cover being developed by researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The cloak has two sides that work together to regulate the temperature inside a parked car. The outer layer is made of thin silica fibers coated in hexagonal boron nitride flakes, which boost the layer's ability to reflect sunlight. This ceramic coating on the fibers makes the outer layer very reflective of solar heat, directing it away from the car. The inner layer is developed of aluminum alloy that reflects heat coming from the car itself back into the vehicle. The silica fibers in the outer layer are woven into a fabric that is then bonded to the aluminum inner layer. The developers designed the Janus cloak to be produced on a large scale, using inexpensive, lightweight, durable and fire-resistant materials.
