On May 10, 2022, Philip Morris International Inc. announced its plan to acquire smokeless tobacco company Swedish Match AB to hasten its push beyond cigarettes. The agreement with Swedish Match ranks as one of the largest transatlantic deals this year and positions Philip Morris in the highly competitive field of oral nicotine products, which are very different from chewing tobacco. The acquisition also opens up the large and growing U.S. smoking alternatives market to the company.

With new products and numerous acquisitions, Philip Morris generated almost 30% of its net revenues from smoke-free products last year. The company developed the IQOS heated-tobacco system and acquired Vectura Group, a developer of asthma drugs. The same year, it acquired Fertin Pharma, a smoking-cessation aid developer, and OtiTopic, a respiratory drug developer for heart attacks in late-stage trials.

Swedish Match makes a smokeless tobacco product, Snus, which is popular in Sweden but banned across the rest of Europe. The company also makes nicotine pouches called ZYN, and sold in the U.S. On October 22, 2019, the FDA granted Swedish Match permission to sell and advertise eight of its Snus smokeless tobacco products. The approval was granted based on scientific evidence of reduced risk submitted by the company.
