    • Oct 2023: A €5 million five-year flagship innovation relationship between the University of Galway and Medtronic has been signed, with the three main objectives being research, STEM education, and the growth of the medtech ecosystem. This is the University of Galway and industry's first official relationship. With Medtronic's investment, the University will be able to grow its medtech ecosystem, advance its present STEM programs, and gain the opportunity for early-stage seed money for potential joint research initiatives. Additionally, the partnership will help the University of Galway build two new research centers. The first was the May 2023 opening of the brand-new Institute for Clinical Trials. The second, which is still growing, will be centered on cutting-edge medicines and medical technologies.

    • Oct 2023: From the major AGENT IDE study of the AGENTTM Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB), Boston Scientific Corporation published positive 12-month findings. Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT), the yearly scientific symposium of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, hosted a late-breaking clinical trial session where primary endpoint findings from the first clinical trial in the United States to assess the safety and efficacy of using a DCB for the management of coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) were presented. While coronary stenting is frequently used to help people who have coronary artery disease regain blood flow to their hearts, 10% of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) in the United States address ISR, a disorder in which plaque or scar tissue narrows or obstructs the artery that has been stented. To avoid ISR recurrence, the AGENT DCB is a balloon catheter coated with paclitaxel intended to reopen these vessels to transport the therapeutic medicine to the vessel wall.
